Korean born Canadian cellist Cehie Kim is an artist who has an international presence in the music world.  She has performed and gave recitals in South Korea, Canada, USA, Germany, Italy, and The Netherlands.  Also performed at many summer festivals such as The International Holland Music Sessions, Tanglewood Music Center, The Banff Centre, The Quartet Program in Fredonia NY, The C.O.S.I. program in Sulmona Italy, and Orford Arts Centre.  She was the cellist for the HMT Leipzig Piano Trio, Chiarina Piano Trio and Quartetta di Luce String Quartet.  Cehie made a special appearance as a guest soloist for Canadian Chamber Choir tour in 2007 and 2009.  The tour included a premiere of Angeline on Ossabaw, a work by a Canadian composer, Elizabeth Raum for a chamber choir and solo cello. In the summer of 2009, Cehie recorded a CD with Canadian Chamber Choir including Jocelyn Morlock’s Exaudi. In the summer of 2016, Cehie was invited as the Cello Mentor and Musical Coach at the SICW (Sächsische Chor- und Instrumentalwoche) in Hohenstein, Germany.

Cehie has won numerous awards in Canada and USA including the Edgar Odell Lovett Scholarship, the full tuition scholarship for the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, President’s Scholarship for Brandon University, MRMTA scholarship competition, Brandon University Concerto Competition, and Rose Bowl Winner of Brandon Music Festival. The 3rd Prize winner at the 2011 Ruth Burr Instrumental Competition in Houston, Cehie has competed in the WAMSO competition 2011 in Minneapolis and she was one of the finalist for the Shepherd School of Music Concerto Competition in 2010. Cehie has most recently given a Solo concert performing the Haydn D Major Cello Concerto with the Colegium Musicum Orchestra of Werdau, Germany in July 2015. 

Cehie currently plays at Konzerthausorchester in Berlin as a Tutti cellist. Previously she has spent two seasons (2015/16-2016/17) working at Komische Oper Berlin as a member of the Orchesterakademie. Cehie frequently subs with Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, and  Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin.

 

In 2015, Cehie has earned the prestige "Meisterklassexamen" degree (Post Graduate) with the Highest Distinction "Bestnote" at Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig.  Very similar to the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree, it is a combination of the highest level of Cello performance and teaching.  Prior to this, Cehie has been a faculty member of the preparatory program at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and at the Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory of Music at Brandon University where she gave Cello Solo and Chamber Music lessons.  She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Brandon University in Manitoba, Canada and Master's Degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, USA. Cehie’s major influences include Norman Fischer, Mark Rudoff, Lluis Claret, James Ehnes, and her most recent mentor, Prof. Peter Bruns.
